Labour Humanists campaign for the full removal from the House of Lords of the Church of England Bishops who currently sit in the Chamber. We also oppose the introduction of any system attempting to replicate the beliefs of British society through allocating automatic seats to religious representatives.
The British government has so far failed to give an assurance that the Bishops will be fully removed from the Upper House, although it is known to have considered the idea of retaining sixteen places reserved for Bishops, as opposed to the current twenty-six. The House of Commons has voted for a fully-elected second chamber, though the final arrangements for this aspect of Parliamentary reform as yet remain unclear.
A briefing on the status and future of Bishops in the Lords has been published by the British Humanist Association, which you can access here.
