Already reported earlier today on the worrying push by the DWP to spend our tax money on developing a faith based welfare sector. One of the many arguments against this socially conservative initiative is the inevitable explosion of discrimination that will happen in employment. Sceptical? Then look at this story.
In the DWP press release Jim Murphy talks of the Salvation Army as an organisation who should have a greater role in the welfare state. Well, in New York complaints have been raised against the horrifically discriminatory employment policies of the Salvation Army who have been allowed to run child and other social services for the city. The NYCLU alleges:
">"The Salvation Army has recently begun to require all New York City employees, and prospective job applicants, to identify their present church affiliation and minister’s name as well as all other churches attended in the previous decade. Moreover, recently developed job descriptions and new job application forms, appear to require that employees “preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ” and to thereby profess their belief in Christianity. The Salvation Army claims an exemption from anti-discrimination laws because it is a church."
Is this what we do as Labour?
